En route to Baralacha La from Jispa, two extraordinary high-altitude lakes appear — Deepak Tal and Suraj Tal. Suraj Tal (4,950m) is one of the highest lakes in India, fed directly by glacier meltwater. The water is impossibly still, impossibly blue.
Timeline
Drive along the Manali-Leh highway north. Cross Darcha police checkpoint (carry photo ID).
Brief stop at Patseo, an army area. Small dhaba for chai.
Glacial lake with mirror-still water. Walk the shore (15–20 min). Photography.
4,950m. One of the highest lakes in India. Baralacha La pass visible. Spend 45–60 minutes. Feel the altitude.
Continue 5km to the summit (4,890m). 360-degree wilderness view.
100km round trip. Arrive late afternoon.
