Rohtang La (3,978m) is the dramatic divide between the lush Kullu Valley and the stark Lahaul high desert. For most people, it is the first snow they have ever touched. Activities: sledging, snowboarding, skiing, photography.

Itinerary

5:30am Depart Manali +

Early start non-negotiable. Rohtang generates massive traffic. Permits required online. Note: closed every Tuesday.

8:00am Stops on the Way +

Solang Valley (optional), Gulaba (snow activities), Rahala Falls at 8,500 ft.

10:00am Rohtang La Summit +

Snow-covered. Activities: sledging, snow scooter rides, skiing hire. Views of Sonapani Glacier.

1:00pm Descent +

Have lunch at Marhi — basic but hot food, excellent views.

4:00pm Return +

To Manali or continue directly toward Jispa (add 2hrs).

Closed every Tuesday for maintenance. Opens mid-May, closes October. Only 800 petrol + 400 diesel vehicles permitted daily. Traffic can add 2 hours in peak summer.
